Monitor Passenger Flow Across Critical Passenger Processing Areas

Passenger experience is shaped by what repeats all day across the terminal: check-in, security screening, border control, boarding, and how smoothly people move between them. When queues behave unexpectedly or circulation starts to break down, stress rises quickly and the effects spread across airport operations.

Flow Analytics by AGC helps teams see what is happening in real time, understand where pressure is building, and respond before service levels fall or bottlenecks affect terminal performance.

From check-in to boarding, see how Flow Analytics by AGC helps airports monitor flow where it matters most.

Understand queue length, waiting time, and throughput during peak waves.

Detect queue build-up early and track the effect of lane changes and staffing actions.

Measure service levels in real time and identify bottlenecks by time of day and arrival patterns.

Spot congestion before it becomes overcrowding and disrupts passenger movement.

Monitor density, dwell time, and flow patterns to keep boarding areas predictable.

What We Measure Across the Terminal

Queue monitoring

Track each queue from join to service to understand waiting time, queue length, throughput, and service level performance. Spot passenger processing bottlenecks early, quantify their impact, and validate improvements after operational changes.

Dwell time analysis

Measure time spent in waiting areas and key zones to highlight both risks and opportunities for better service, layout, commercial planning, and passenger guidance.

Flow tracking

Visualize end-to-end terminal flow across entrances, check-in areas, security checkpoints, border control, departure halls, concourses, and gates. Identify where congestion builds, how pressure shifts between zones, and how passenger flow affects terminal performance.

Cluster detection

Monitor crowd density continuously and trigger alerts when areas approach unsafe or uncomfortable levels of occupancy, supporting operational decision-making and control room awareness.

How It Works

1

Define terminal zones and KPIs

Select the passenger processing areas and circulation zones you want to monitor, then align on the KPIs that matter most to your operations, passenger experience, and planning teams.

2

Deploy privacy-first LiDAR

Sensors are positioned to measure movement, queues, density, and dwell time while excluding personal data and preserving privacy.

3

Use insights to improve operations and planning

Operations teams respond in real time, while planning teams use historical trends to support terminal planning, airport capacity planning, layout improvements, and process optimisation.

Why LiDAR? Moving Beyond Legacy Video Analytics

Most airport operators rely on camera-based systems designed for security, not spatial intelligence. While video is great for identification, it fails in the complex, high-density environments of a modern terminal. Flow Analytics uses 3D LiDAR to provide the ground truth.

Feature Legacy Video Solution (CCTV) Flow Analytics by AGC (LiDAR)
Crowd Density Fails. “Occlusion” causes people to disappear behind others. Excels. 3D pulses see “around” objects to count every individual.
Lighting Conditions Inconsistent. Struggles with terminal glare and shadows. Perfect. Operates in total darkness or direct sunlight.
Data Privacy Risk. Captures PII (faces), requiring heavy redaction. Native. No faces or PII ever captured. 100% GDPR compliant.
Field of View Narrow. Requires high density of cameras for coverage. Wide. One sensor covers up to 100m with cm-level precision.
Total Infrastructure High. Requires high-density placement, massive cabling for HD streams, and heavy server-side processing. Optimized. Fewer mounting points needed due to wide FOV; low-bandwidth edge processing reduces cabling and server load.

Solving the "Occlusion" Problem

In a packed security queue, a 2D camera sees a "mass" of pixels. If a tall passenger stands in front of a child, the child disappears from the count.

Our LiDAR solution creates a high-definition 3D point cloud. Because the pulses travel in three dimensions, the system distinguishes between individuals even in shoulder-to-shoulder conditions. You get a "digital twin" of your passenger flow, regardless of how crowded the terminal becomes.

Actionable Intelligence, Not Just Images

Video analytics often requires massive bandwidth to stream high-def footage to a server for processing.

  • Edge Processing: Our LiDAR sensors process data at the source.
  • Low Bandwidth: Only anonymous data is sent to your dashboard.
  • Zero Liability: You can’t leak what you never collect. By removing the "human face" from the data stream, you remove the primary cybersecurity risk associated with passenger tracking.

What Airport Teams Get

Real-time operational visibility

Live queue, flow, density, and dwell-time KPIs to support faster decisions during peaks, disruptions, uneven arrivals, and day-to-day operational changes.

Historical performance insights

Compare days, waves, and terminal areas to understand recurring pressure points, monitor service level performance, and prove the impact of interventions.

Evidence for planning and investment

Use trusted data to support terminal planning, airport capacity decisions, process improvement, and future infrastructure or layout changes.

Shared facts across teams

Give operations, passenger experience, planning, security, and safety teams a consistent view of what is happening and where action is needed.

Operational Actions Airport Teams Can Support

With Flow Analytics by AGC, airport operators can:

  • reallocate staff to areas where queues are building in real time
  • adjust passenger guidance, signage, or announcements based on live density and flow data
  • evaluate lane changes and processing adjustments using before-and-after evidence
  • support terminal planning and airport capacity planning with real usage data
  • demonstrate compliance with safety and crowd-management requirements

Recent Airport Crowd Management Implementation

Flow Analytics by AGC has been implemented at Helsinki Airport to monitor passenger flow in the departure hall. The LiDAR-based system tracks how travellers move through various circulation zones, providing live queue times, density heatmaps, dwell-time insights, and operational visibility. The project supports safer operations, better terminal performance, and an improved passenger experience while protecting privacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about privacy-first airport analytics, real-time operational KPIs, queue monitoring, historical performance analysis, system integration, pilot scope, and what to expect after scheduling a demo.

Do you capture personal data or identify individuals such as age or gender?

No. The system is designed to exclude personal data. It does not capture faces, identify individuals, or infer attributes such as age or gender.

LiDAR sensors are more expensive than cameras. How is this cost-effective?

While individual LiDAR units have a higher unit cost, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is often lower due to superior Volumetric Mapping. A standard AI camera loses counting precision beyond 15 meters as pixels thin out, requiring a high density of overlapping units to cover a large hall. In contrast, LiDAR utilizes active Time-of-Flight (ToF) pulses to maintain centimeter-level accuracy over a radius of up to 100 meters. This increased Effective Coverage Radius means a single LiDAR sensor can monitor a spatial volume that would typically require three to five cameras. By reducing the "Sensor Density" needed, airports can achieve 100% visibility with 30–50% fewer units, leading to significantly lower costs for mounting, cabling, network bandwidth, and long-term maintenance.

What will our airport operations team see in real time?

Live KPIs by zone, including waiting time, queue length, throughput, density, dwell time, and service level indicators, so teams can spot build-up early and react faster.

Can you distinguish passenger processing queues from general circulation?

Yes. We model queue behaviour using movement patterns and service points to separate people waiting to be served from general passenger flow.

Can we compare performance before and after an operational change?

Yes. The same KPIs are available historically, so you can validate staffing changes, lane changes, layout adjustments, or passenger guidance updates with evidence.

Does it integrate with our existing airport tools?

Yes. Outputs can be provided for integration with operational dashboards and reporting workflows, depending on your environment and requirements.

Can we start with one terminal area or another critical touchpoint?

Yes. Many airports start with one or two critical touchpoints and expand once KPIs and workflows are established.

What happens after we schedule a demo?

We review your terminal zones, KPIs, and reporting needs, then propose a practical pilot scope based on your priorities.
