How people move through a square, where they gather and which areas they use can reveal a great deal about a public space. Flow Analytics by AGC has launched a measurement project at Ala-Malmi Square in Helsinki to help the city better understand these patterns and inform the square’s future development.

A LiDAR sensor discreetly installed at Malmin Nova shopping centre measures visitor flows across the outdoor square at distances of up to 115 metres. Its unobtrusive placement allows data to be collected without changing how people use the space.

The measurements provide the international GreenInCities project with insights into movement patterns, gathering points and the use of different parts of the square. The project’s Finnish partners are Forum Virium Helsinki and the City of Helsinki.

Beyond visitor counts, the analysis helps show how activity is distributed across the square. Understanding where people pass through and where they gather can help the city identify well-used areas and places that could benefit from improvements.

The measurements use no cameras, and individuals cannot be identified. The sensor collects only anonymised movement data, providing insights into the use of public space while protecting visitors’ privacy.

These insights will help the city better understand what draws people to Ala-Malmi Square and assess future development measures. The aim is to support decisions that make the square a more active and pleasant place to spend time.
